E.A.S.T. 2017 Preview
November 7, 2017
It's that time! Catalogs for the tour can be picked up at any Austin public library for free. These will help you navigate to other studios, but I've narrowed down some of the information specifically as it relates to my work below. For the full scoop on the kick-off party, what you'll see, and a chance to win a signed print, just keep on reading.
The Low-Down
Due E.A.S.T.
Due E.A.S.T. is a fundraiser for both the East & West Austin Studio Tours, and is a great way to support local art in a city that defines itself by its creativity. One work of art by almost all of the 400+ artists included in the tour will be on exihibit and offers a chance to see everything in one place and to make choices about which studios to add to your personal tour. There is also an option to indulge in a 4-course dinner catered by local artist and chef Sonya Cote of Eden East and Hillside Farmacy. The group show will also be open on both weekends of the tour.
Print Giveaway
Leading up to and throughout E.A.S.T, anyone who helps promote my work and my stop on the tour will have a chance to win a signed giclée print of "Universe: Consciousness" through a random drawing. This is a full-sized print of the original at 18" wide x 24" tall. It was an artist proof and can not be sold, making it a one-of-a-kind. All you need to do is post images of my art (feel free to use images from this message) or photos of my studio taken during the tour on either Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram. You may enter as many times as you like by posting on all 3 channels and/or posting multiple times.
Include the following information:
It's important to use the hashtag and to tag me so that I can see it and enter you into the drawing.

In The Night. In the Dark.
This work was created specifically for Due E.A.S.T. and can only be viewed by going to the kick-off party or visiting the group show. With its title pulled from a favorite line in Shirley Jackson's "The Haunting of Hill House," the work is about looking fear in the eye and managing it. You can read more about it in this blog post. Get tickets to the kick-off party on November 9 here.
Emergence
Using geological change as a metaphor for personal growth, this series includes 8 conceptual landscapes painted from photos I took in and around Big Bend National Park and Big Bend Ranch State Park, as well as smaller studies for each. To learn more about this series, check out this blog post.
Candor
In the summer of 2016 I was caught in an electrical storm while camping at Davis Mountains State Park and witnessed St. Elmo's Fire (and thankfully escaped in tact). It was a beautiful, multi-sensory experience and one I wanted to be able to revisit again and again. Each painting in this series acts as a time portal back to that space in my head, with the act of rhythmic painting + the sound of the perfectly timed song "Candor" by the local band Balmorhea triggering vivid sense memories. I captured the story in detail here.
Universe
My work "Universe" is comprised of 10 giclée prints of a night sky photo I took at Big Bend National Park that I painted on top of. Each panel tackles a concept in science that relates to the basic realities of our universe and is based on my research of current findings in astronomy and physics, each a piece of a larger puzzle yet to be solved. The originals all go together as one piece, but due to the popularity of these I am selling prints of each panel separately at a more affordable price. Each is signed and numbered in a limited edition of 10. You can learn more about the ideas and science behind "Universe" on my blog.
What Are You?
Inspired by a curious hummingbird that hovered in front of me just checking me out while I was sketching a canyon at Big Bend Ranch State Park, this painting asks the ultimate existential question. The concept of consciousness and the connectivity between living creatures, paring us down to our essential building blocks (a carbon atom in this case), is key, but it's as much about making deliberate choices about the kind of person we want to be in this world, and then being that person. I talk about it in more depth in this blog post. I will also have some of the smaller studies I did for this painting on view.
Black Ouroboros
This work was created as a response to my first time seeing the Trans-Pecos pipeline slicing through a landscape that is near and dear to my heart. The photo was taken between Marfa and Presidio with Chianti Peak in the distance. I painted on top of a giclée print on heavy stock paper, using the ouroboros here as a nod of respect to the water protectors at Standing Rock and the legend of the black snake wrapping across the land in advance of environmental devastation. I wrote about it on my blog in this post.
En Plein Air drawings
En Plein Air is a French term for drawing or paintings outdoors, as in parking yourself in nature with a sketchbook or an easel and capturing what you see. I find that it's a great way to be present in a place, creating much more detailed memories of a scene than had I taken a photo or even if I simply just sat and enjoyed the moment. I'll have a smattering of plain air sketches done from both Big Bend National Park and the state park.
Astrophotography Prints
I will have two of my astrophotography shots available on 24" x 18" metallic paper, which enhances the luminosity of these night sky photos. I can also be taking custom orders for different sizes of these as well as for more of my astrophotography shots. Shown here is the historic graveyard in the "ghost town" of Terlingua with the rising Milky Way and a very cooperative meteor as a backdrop.
