“We can all talk, we can all write, and if the blocks are removed, we can all draw and paint and make things. Drawing, painting, and making things are natural human activities, but in many they remain in the seed state, as potentials or wishes."

—Sister Corita Kent

My experience mentoring an Austin ISD student through the Chula League's Little Artist BIG ARTIST program was so rewarding that I decided to continue working with kids ages 9–11 through a summer art camp held at my home studio in August. This age range is an important transition period creatively. There is a natural release of more iconic and abstract rendering that permeates early childhood artwork with a shift towards more realistic representation. It's at this point that many people develop blocks as they become disappointed by their ability to transfer what they see in their minds to paper (or whatever medium). The age-old myth of artistic genius and cultural ideas of innate artistic skill reinforce these blocks. My focus is on helping to nip these blocks in the bud before they become limiting. We'll be working on basic painting and drawing skills that will help kids as they go through this natural period of creative evolution, but beyond that we'll be working on developing their autonomy as creative thinkers and makers. After testing the waters with different mediums, campers will self-direct their projects under my guidance, culminating in an open studio exhibit on Friday night where they will display their work for family and their invited guests.
